Amazon PPC budget calculator
How much daily budget your Sponsored Products campaigns need. Enter the orders you want from ads each day, your price, conversion rate and cost per click: the calculator works out the clicks and spend that takes, the budget to set, the ACoS you'll run at, and, with your profit per order, whether those ad orders make or lose money.
How it's worked out
- Clicks a day = orders you want ÷ conversion rate. At a 10% conversion rate, every order takes 10 clicks.
- Spend a day = clicks × cost per click. ACoS = that spend ÷ the ad sales it brings.
- Daily budget to set = the spend plus a quarter, rounded up. Traffic swings from day to day; a campaign that runs out of budget stops showing for the rest of that day, often in the evening, when shoppers buy.
- Ad cost per order = cost per click ÷ conversion rate. If it is more than the order's profit before ads, every ad order loses money, however big the budget.
In the example, 5 orders a day at a 10.0% conversion rate take 50 clicks; at $1.10 a click that's $55.00 a day, so a $69 budget, and an ACoS of 36.7%. But each order then costs $11.00 in ads against $9.00 of profit before ads: it loses $2.00 an order. At $0.90 a click or less, the same budget breaks even. Spending more doesn't fix that; a lower bid or a better conversion rate does.
Budget or bid?
The budget decides how much a campaign may spend in a day; the bids decide what each click costs and where the ad shows. Raise the budget of a campaign that runs out while it sells at or under your target ACoS: it is leaving profitable sales on the table every afternoon. Lower the bids, not just the budget, of a campaign that runs over your breakeven ACoS. The ACoS calculator works out breakeven and target ACoS, and the PPC bid optimization guide sets bids from them.
PPC budget questions
What happens when a campaign runs out of budget?
Its ads stop showing until the next day, and the campaign manager shows it as out of budget. A campaign that runs out most days is capped by its budget, not by how well it sells.
How much should a new product's budget be?
Enough for the clicks a few orders a day take: at a 10% conversion rate, 30 clicks a day for 3 orders. Fewer than that and a week of numbers says little about which keywords sell.
Can a tool set budgets for me?
The profit autopilot in MyProfit looks at each campaign every day: one that keeps running out while selling under its target ACoS gets 25% more budget, one that spends it all at a loss gets 20% less while its bids come down, all inside a daily limit you can set.
